What BC's guidelines actually say

It asks educators to think carefully about seven areas: transparency, privacy, accuracy, equity, academic integrity, the impact on learning, and professional responsibility.

Use AI to make all your decisions, trust AI output without review, replace your professional judgment, or share student data without thinking about privacy.

What it IS asking

Be transparent about how you use AI tools, protect student privacy, review AI output with a critical eye, and consider the impact on learning for all students.

In other words: use AI thoughtfully, the same way you use any other tool. That's it. You've been doing that with technology your whole career.


Embracing AI doesn't mean abandoning who you are

There's a version of this conversation that frames AI as a threat — to teacher jobs, to authentic learning, to the soul of education. And those are real conversations worth having, especially in spaces like higher education where academic integrity is genuinely under pressure.

But for a K–7 classroom teacher in BC? The more honest framing is this: you are going to spend Sunday evening either writing 28 report card comments from scratch, or starting from a thoughtful draft that already knows each student's designation, their ELL level, and the observations you've been recording all term. Either way, the comments are yours. The difference is whether you arrive at Monday morning depleted or ready.

The world your students are growing into already has AI in it. Learning to use it thoughtfully — with you as the guide — is itself part of preparing them well.

Teacher autonomy isn't threatened by having a capable assistant. It's expressed through how you direct that assistant — what you ask for, what you keep, what you change, and what you throw out entirely because it didn't capture your class at all. That editorial judgment is professional skill, and it matters.
